* During the planning of the Juneteenth Unity Day Parade and Celebration, Jonte Jones of the Young Leaders of America came to my house and asked me to step down as the SCLC rep for the event. Jones' reasoning was that, "people hated me," and I was, "too controversial." Because of this, Jones felt that my association with the Juneteenth Celebration would hurt the event; never mind that I had alredy been working on the project for 5 months and had already secured the support of the major corporations that had agreed to help with the event before Jones came on board. Of course, I told Jones I wouldn't step down. In fact, I told Jones that if people hated me, "Oh well. They'll get over it."
* A month earlier, Lewis Ross of Community United in Faith asked me to take it easy on the City of Roanoke, Va. Ross was concerned about the comments I made during a press conference concerning Roanoke City Council's decision not to interview Sherman Lea, Jr. for a position on the Roanoke City School Board. Ross felt that my comments about Roanoke Mayor Nelson Harris and Roanoke City Councilman Bev Fitzpatrick could hurt the Juneteenth Celebration. Again, never mind that I had been working on the event several months before Ross had come on board.
* No, I'm not upset with these men. These men are entitled to their opinions. If they want to play things safe, fine. It's just difficult to trust folks who play it safe. Plus, when these men came on board, it's not as if they didn't know who I was, what I do, and how I do it.
* In the years that I've been writing www.jeffartis.com and THE ARTIS BLOG, from the evolution of THE BLACK CONSERVATIVE NEWSLETTER in 1994 to now, I've been asked to tone it down a bit, that I was stirring up trouble and talking about folks and issues too much. I've chuckled quite a bit over these requests. As I've told some folks, "Ain't gonna happen."
* I am not a man who is afraid of his own shadow. I'm not a man who is afraid to take a stand. I feel an obligation to speak out when wrong has been committed. That's just me. I'll tell you right now. I wouldn't give a bucket of warm spit for any man who is afraid to speak out against wrong. Speaking out against wrong is being a good Christain, being a good citizen, and being a good American. And if people don't like what I say, if Channel 10 television accuses me of being a race baiter, if other media outlets want to knock me, or if people and politicians don't want to shake my hand, so be it. I'd rather be right and just than popular. After all, as Colen Powell says in his autobiography, "Sometimes being responsible means pissing people off."
* In the area of civil and human rights, if you aren't pissing people off from time to time, you aren't doing you j.o.b. Chances are you are liked, but, you aren't respected. If you aren't respected, chances are you are of no use to the people you are supposed to be representing.
* Which brings me to the news that Mac McCadden is no longer the host of the NAACP televisor show, having resigned as Communications Chair of the Roanoke NAACP. The Onzlee Ware Campaign went to WDRL Television and complained about McCadden hosting the NAACP television show although McCadden was not using the show as a political platform and was doing nothing wrong. However, McCadden is running against Onzlee Ware for a seat in the House of Delegates in November. Ware's Campaign is afraid that McCadden was gaining an unfair advantage in the upcoming election. It should be noted that Ware refuses to appear on any NAACP production and has called the NAACP irrelevant.
* Playing it safe, WDRL accepted the Ware Campaign's request. Sadly, the NAACP didn't take a stand and support McCadden.
* What's my take on the issue? McCadden got screwed. It was wrong for WDRL to cave to Ware's political pressure. While Rev. Carl Tinsley will be a good replacement for McCadden on the NAACP television show, the Roanoke NAACP should have supported McCadden and should have strongly spoke out against the Ware Campaign's whining and crying which amounts to a muzzle on free speech. Not speaking out on the issue shows a lack of guts. As for the Ware Campaing, the Ware Campaign is a bunch of cowards. I'll say this again to the Ware folks, "If you're scared, buy a dog."
* Let me close by saying this. There are too many scared Black men in the Roanoke Valley. I'm not one of them. Oh, yeah. It's nice to see Martin Jeffrey getting involved in things again. Welcome back, Martin.

* What is going on with the NAACP television show, "Our Voices," on WDRL Television, Sunday at 12 noon and 6:30 P.M.? My sources tell me that Roanoke, Va. House of Delegate member Onzlee Ware and/or the Ware Campaign is applying pressure on the station to have Mac McCadden removed as the show's host. McCadden has done nothing wrong to be removed from the show. As for Ware, this is just another incident in a long list of cowardly, back door shenanigans to reassure his re-election to the Virginia House of Delegates in November. As I've said many times before of Del. Ware and the Onzlee Ware Fan Club, "If you're scared, buy a dog. Man up, brother, man up."
* If McCadden is being removed from the NAACP television show, he went out with a bang. McCadden's guest on the 6/25/07 show was Rev. Carl Tinsley, Vice President of the Roanoke NAACP. I have a great deal of respect for Rev. Tinsley, one of the few African-American men in the Roanoke Valley who isn't afraid to speak his mind. Rev. Tinsley isn't afraid of his own shadow, like so many Black men in the Roanoke Valley are.
* You owe it to yourself to get a tape of this show. Rev. Tinsley talked about the problems in Roanoke, Va. between the Roanoke City Police Dept. and its citizens. Tinsley pulled no punches. And I'm going tell you, Rev. Tinsley and I are on the same page. I've seen some good stuff from the RPD. But, as I've said before, I've seen some no good, dirty stuff from the RPD, as well.
* During the show, Rev. Tinsley gave some tips on what to do and what not to do if you are stopped by the RPD.
1) Ask, "Am I under arrest?" 2) If you are told you are under arrest, keep your mouth shut and ask for a lawyer. 3) Know your rights. Know that it is illegal for a policeman to lie to you. 4) Do not talk about your impending case over the phone, someone may be listening. 5) Remember that it takes time to build a case against you. Don't panic. 6) If you are innocent, do not accept a plea bargain. 7) Remember, you must be found innocent not to be convicted of a felony. 8) Be truthful with your family and your lawyer. 9) Don't let the system define you. 10) When stopped by the police, if you lose your cool, you're going to jail.
* As a former government teacher, my students used to ask me why they needed to study the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I'd tell them that they needed to know their rights because you never know what is going to happen in the future. When it came to the 4'th, 5'th and 6'th Amendments, I always told my students, that when confronted by the police, always be courteous and respectful, even if you don't want to be. Only give your real name and your real address when asked. If you lie, you will end up going to jail. Do not volunteer any additional information. Again, be courteous and respectful. Ask if you are under arrest. If you are under arrest, ask for a lawyer. Don't say anything else until you talk to your lawyer. Keep your mouth shut, that goes for the other people who are with you, as well. I'd tell my students that too many times, people go to jail because they just can't shut up.
I'd also tell my student to never give the police an excuse to arrest you. Never run from the police. Never lie to the police. Never cop an attitude with the police. Never curse the police. When stopped by the police, if you have to reach into a pocket or reach into the glove compartment of your car to get an i.d., TELL THE POLICEMAN WHAT YOU ARE DOING AHEAD OF TIME. That policeman may think you are reaching for a gun. If you are driving and stopped by the police, put both hands on the stering wheel, keep your seat belt on and sit there UNTIL THE POLICE SAY IT'S O.K. TO MOVE.
I'd tell my students to watch for a badge number. Listen out for a policeman's name. When you get home, write down everything that happened during the incident on paper just in case the policeman lies in the future about what happened. Finally, I'd tell my students that if the police messed with them during the incident, to come see me. I tell people the very same thing today.
* When dealing with the police, so many people simply don't know their rights. People think they know their rights. But, in reality they don't. And because people don't know their rights, too many times, people end up shooting themselves in the foot when dealing with our law enforcement and judicial system.
* The law says that the police have the right to ask you your name and adderss. The law also says you must give the police your correct name and address when asked. Other than that, you have the right to keep your mouth shut when the police question you, other than to ask if you are under arrest and/or to ask for a lawyer if you are being placed under arrest.
* The law also says that you are protected by the Fourth Amendment against illegal search and seizure. The Fourth Amendment was further strenghened by the recent Supreme Court decision in Brendlin v. California which extends the Fourth Amendment to protect the driver of a car against illegal search and seizure.
* Anymore, I tell people to quit flapping their gums about what the police can and cannot do in certain situations. It's time to stop talking. It's time to start learning about your rights. It's time to start protecting yourself. It's time to start covering your backside.
* To that end, there's an event being put on by the National NAACP that everyone should attend. If you're not willing to help yourself and attend this event, then don't complain about the RPD when bad things happen. Here's the info on the event.
GET THE 4-1-1 ON THE 5-0 SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 2007 WILLIAM FLEMING HIGH SCHOOL 2 P.M - 7 P.M.
* I'll see you there. Again, if you're not willing to help yourself, don't complain about the RPD. I'll be there.

It's been a while since I've talked about sports, so here goes.
* Mike Vick and his involvement with dog fighting? Where's the evidence that Vick did anything wrong? Let's end the speculation.
* Pac Man Jones is an idiot. Yo, Pac Man. With everything that's on the net, I'm sure you can take care of your strip club jones in the privacy of your own home without people getting shot.
* Sammy Sosa is a Hall of Famer. He's a heck of a ball player. If you can't show me proof that Sammy did 'roids, just shut up.
* The same for Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire.
* Randy Moss in New England? The Patriots will be Super Bowl champs.
* For my money, I'll take Tom Brady over Payton Manning. Brady is the Bart Starr of his generation.
* My O's of Baltimore just plain stink. I've been an O's fan for over 40 years. I've seen some bad times. But, never like this. Until the O's get new ownership and ballplayers that want to win, they'll continue to be a lousy team.
* Congrats to Tiger Woods. Daughters are great.
* If I owned the Lakers, I'd trade Kobe ASAP after the way he's acted toward the team.
* I've been having fun with Dale, Jr. fans since Junior signed with Hendrick Motorsports. For over 10 years, Earnhart Sr. and Earnnhart Jr. fans have been saying that Jeff Gordon was gay. They've questioned Jeff's manhood along with Gordon's teammate, Jimmy Johnson. A buddy of mine even refers to Gordon and Johnson as, "The Gay Team." When Junior signed on to be a teammate of Gordon and Johnson, I just couldn't resist. I've been asking Earnhart fans who are friends of mine, "If Jeff and Jimmy are gay and Junior is going to be their teammate, does this mean Junior is coming out of the closet?" I've never seen people actually turn green before.

* I had hoped to write about something important today, but, those folks in the Onzlee Ware Fan Club just won't leave me alone. No, I'm not upset. Annoyed, yes. Upset, no. And I'm only annoyed because I get tired of so-called intelligent people whining like a two-year-old spoiled child who pouts, whines, cries, stomps their feet and holds their breath until they either get their way or until someone just knocks them into the middle of next week, figuratively speaking of course.
* Is there a "Nanny 911" for political campaigns? If there is, I will pick up the tab so "Nanny 911" can help all of the cry-babies in the Onzlee Ware Fan Club, beginning with Henry Hale.
* In an E-mail to a reader of www.jeffartis.com, Mr. Hale took issue with what I wrote in my 6/11/07, "THE ARTIS BLOG" about an incident between Onzlee Ware and Valerie Garner. I guess Mr. Hale approves of Del. Ware getting in the face of a female constituent who simple asked Ware to move a campaign sign back a few feet so people can see oncoming traffic. A simple request from Garner. A undignified response from Ware.
* I guess Mr. Hale approves of Ware's, "Gansta Rap Politics." To be honest, it's a good thing I didn't see what happened between Ware and Garner. You see, I'm old school. And where I come from, you never, ever, disrespect a woman. But, hey, if Mr. Hale feels it's cool for Ware to disrespect women, I guess it's cool for Mr. Hale to feel it's o.k. to be a jackass, too.
* I would think that Mr. Hale would be man enough to ask me where I got my information from concerning the Garner/Ware incident. Of course, I'd tell Mr. Hale it was none of his business. But, I'd also tell him that Ms. Garner didn't come running to me to tell me, as he claims. But, hey, that's the thing about folks like Hale. They don't have the stones to check out things before jumping to conclusions. Hey, if you're scared, buy a dog.
* Which brings me to another "Onzlee Ware Fan Club Whiney Moment." Some OWFC folks are upset with me because Ware didn't attend last week's Juneteenth Unity Day Celebration and Parade. Hey, don't get upset with me. Ware was invited. I personally sent Ware an invitation to attend and to take part in the festivities. In fact, Ware's invitation was the very first invitation that I sent out. You see, unlike some people, I have class.
* United States Congressman Bob Goodlatte got back with me. State Senator Brandon Bell got back with me. Del. William Fralin got back with me. State Senator John Edwards got back with me. Sheriff Octavia Johnson got back with me. Gov. Tim Kaine got back with me. Commissioner of Revenue Sherman Holland got back with me. No Onzlee Ware. Oh well, his loss. More hot dogs for the kids.
* For the life of me, I don't understand why members of the Onzlee Ware Fan Club are so scared, so hostile. Could it be that they don't want people to know that since his second year in office, Ware doesn't have much of a legislative record? Could it be that they don't want people to know that since his second year in office, Ware's legislative record is one that Clarence Thomas would love? Yes, that Clarence Thomas. Could it be that they don't want people to know that Ware is a surrogate Republican in the General Assembly, that Ware is Morgan Griffith's boy? I don't know.
* Let me offer some advice to the Onzlee Ware Fan Club. Drink some green tea. Try some yoga. Buy a CD of whale songs. Try some Zen.
* I've got a better idea for the Onzlee Ware Fan Club. Quit whining! For all of the dirty tricks you've played, for all of the web sites you have high jacked, for all of your efforts to have opposition removed from television and radio shows, (myself included), all of your whining and crying reminds me of little children. In other words, and I just hate so much to be crude, grow some. You'll feel better in the morning. I hope that works for you Mr. Hale. If you are scared, buy a dog.

* If you get a chance, check out this video on YOU TUBE. I warn you. The video is very disturbing. The link to this video is:
* There are very few people in this area who are more pro-police than I am. Do the crime, do the time. I've walked a picket line with members of the Roanoke City Police Dept. in an effort to get Roanoke policemen and policewomen more pay. I've stuck up for policemen who have been falsely accused of police brutality. I've stuck up for policemen who were about to get the shaft by Roanoke, Va. Police Chief Joe Gaskins and Roanoke, Va. City Manager, Darlene Burcham.
* However, I am not stupid. While I will continue to say that the overwhelming majority of Roanoke, Va. policemen and policewomen are good, hard working, honest people, there are problems with the RPD.
* It all starts at the top. Roanoke, Va. Police Chief Joe Gaskins is incompetent and a horrible police chief. Period, end of discussion. Gaskins should have been fired years ago. Gaskins only keeps his job because: 1) Roanoke City Manager Darlene Burcham has his back. 2) The Roanoke media is soft when it comes to his incompetence. 3) Black civil rights and social organizations always seem to be giving this man awards. Why? I don't know. 4) Roanoke, Va. policemen know if they tell anyone how incompetent Gaskins really is, they are out the door. Remember Butch Lewis? As incompetent as Gaskins is, he is equally as vengeful. Gaskins will stick a knife in your back and think nothing of it. Plus, the man isn't above lying. I know. He's done it to me. 5) Being Black, Gaskins fits nicely into Roanoke, Va.'s goal of, "diversity."
* Gaskins aside, let me be honest. There are a handful of policemen and policewomen who have no business being employed by the Roanoke, Va. Police Dept. Again, period. End of discussion.
* What do I mean? I know of Roanoke, Va. off duty policemen harassing Roanoke citizens, Roanoke policemen refusing to enforce curfew laws, Roanoke policemen telling drug dealers who called the police on them, Roanoke policemen not writing reports, Roanoke policemen not enforcing public nuisance laws and Roanoke policemen not showing up when called. I also know of several instances where the Roanoke Police Dept. applied pressure to media outlets to keep certain information away from the public and the RPD refusing to enforce the law as it is written on the books. And please don't get me started on the racist, economically discriminatory Roanoke City Police Dept. policy of, "crime containment," where crime is "contained" to certain areas of the city; usually Black and usually poor to lower middle class.
* The problems with the RPD isn't just based upon race. Economics plays a huge part in how the RPD does things. The folks who live in Southeast Roanoke, Va. have the same problems with the RPD as the people who live in Northwest Roanoke, Va. This goes for both young people and old people.
* While I trust individual policemen on the RPD, I do not trust the RPD on the whole. Under Joe Gaskins, the RPD simply cannot be trusted. Why? Because Gaskins can't be trusted. Simply put, the last time I tried to work with the RPD, I almost got my head blown off. How? Gaskins hooked me up with a dirty cop. Gaskins knew the cop was dirty. He even said so in the newspaper.
On the other hand, I had no idea the cop was dirty. I didn't know the information I was giving this dirty cop was going back to the very drug dealers I was trying to run out of my neighborhood. How did I find out the cop was dirty? Through conversations with my sources. The dirty cop? Fred Pledge, who did federal time for the things he got busted for. And he wasn't the only cop on the RPD at that time. The other dirty members of the RPD just never got caught.
* I know there will be payback for me saying the RPD as an institution can't be trusted. However, some things need to be said. After all, how can you trust a police department when that police department tries to hide information, doctor information and tries to get rid of good, honest policemen who try to inform the public of that department's shortcomings and misconduct? If a police department screws its own people, how in the world can that police department be trusted? It can't be trusted.
* This is not to say that the RPD is always wrong. They aren't. Many people who complain about the RPD bring stuff on themselves. More about that in Wednesday's THE ARTIS BLOG.

Why should you wear your seat belt? Check out the following pictures. The driver of this car was involved in an accident on Interstate 581, here in Roanoke, Va. The driver of this car was wearing a seat belt. An idiot driver of another car clipped this car from behind before leaving the scene of the accident. After being clipped in the rear by the idiot driver, this car hit a concrete median barrier before flipping down Interstate 581 and then sliding down the interstate on the driver's side of this car. The car flipped and slid for almost a mile. The heat from this car sliding down Interstate 581 caused both doors on the driver's side of the car to melt to the frame of the car. Luckily, the driver of this car only suffered a concussion, some memory loss, several nasty bumps and several nasty bruises. It could have been a lot worse. So please, don't forget to buckle up. And remember, there is a God.

* It's summer time, which means it's GRADUATION TIME.
* Congratulations to all who have completed the rigors of elementary school, middle school, and high school. As you begin your lives as adults, I'd just like to wish you," Good Luck."
* Given that so many in our society now view education as a waste of time, I'd like to encourage all of you high school graduates to pat yourself on the back for doing the right thing by staying in school until you graduated.
* To the parents, the relatives, the friends, the care takers, and, of course, the teachers and school personnel of all of this year's high school graduates, I'd like to say, "Thank You." Thank you for helping our children hang in there until the task of finishing high school is complete.
* Check out the pictures of Joseph Criner's graduation party. I was there 6/10/07. Good guy, great family. The pictures are posted on the "GOT PICTURES?" page of jeffartis.com.
* I hope to see you Saturday, June 16'th, at Washington Park for our FIRST ANNUAL JUNETEENTH UNITY DAY PARADE AND CELEBRATION. It's going to be a good time. Remember, this event is free to the public. So, come and get your grub on. For more information on this event, please visit the "JUNETEENTH" page on jeffartis.com.
* THE ARTIS BLOG will return to it's regular Monday, Wednesday and Friday format on 6/18/07. First up, addressing the outrageous flyer put out by the organization, "CITIZENS HANDCUFFED FOR JUSTICE."
* And what's this? OH, NO!!!!!!!! Jeff Artis hosting a radio show? The Roanoke SCLC having its own radio show? Coming in July on WTOY Radio, 1480 A.M.
* The Roanoke, Va. NAACP will be holding a workshop concerning police brutality on June 30'th at William Fleming High School. As I learn more details on this event, I'll post this information on jeffartis.com.
* Please show some love for the "COUNTRYSIDE NEIGHBORHOOD ALLIANCE" and it's chairperson, Valerie Garner, and co-chairperson Lloyd Long. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who wants to shut down Countryside Gold Course is a fool. Why? Only a fool would want to shut down a money making business that's a valuable asset to the community. But, hey. We are talking about Roanoke City Council here. 'Nuff said. I'll be adding a new page to jeffartis.com to better tell you about this controversy. You know me, I hate to see good people get the shaft.
* And to Roanoke, Va. House of Delegate member, Onzlee Ware. Onzlee, Onzlee, Onzlee. What, you're a rapper now? Disrespecting Valerie Garner a few weeks ago after she simply asked you to move one of your campaign signs a few feet because your campaign sign is in the sight line of cars pulling into traffic on Cove Road? Come on brother. You can act better than that. I guess all those gang bangers and drug dealers you represent in court is beginning to rub off. I'd like to talk to you about it. But, every time I come around, you run the other way. If you're scared, buy a dog. Oh, well. Your loss.
